Prostate Cancer UK // Event registration platform

The charity wants to stop using third-party event registration platforms to gain more control of the user journey and improve conversion rates.

I WAS THE UI DESIGNER WORKING IN AN AGILE TEAM.

The team included myself, the product owner, a digital producer and the developers. Production of UX flows were outsourced to an external agency.

PAST PROBLEMS WITH USING THIRD-PARTY REGISTRATION PLATFORMS…

  • There are limitations when trying to tailor these sites to the specifics of an event.

  • A lot of the charity’s product owners use different registration platforms, creating massive inconsistency.

  • The pages created are often off-brand and at worse appear inauthentic which leads to drop-off.

  • Having to redirect to a third-party breaks up the user journey which can be jarring and also lead to drop-off.

We worked with UX agency Lighthouse who pulled together new and improved user flows. I took the low-fidelity wireframes forward to create an on-brand interface for the platform.

DROP-DOWN MENUS VS HUMAN ERROR

Open fields can create problems with data collection, so upon reflection, we decided wherever possible to have drop-down menus to keep the data collected from the form as clean and tidy as possible.

CLEAR ERROR MESSAGING

Initially, the next button was to be disabled until all required fields were completed, but keeping it active provided us with a trigger for error messages. We couldn’t reasonably rely on a user to click on a disabled next button to prompt those warnings, and in-line real-time errors can often be laggy.

SHIP TO TEST APPROACH

The objective was to create an MVP that could be tested with the next main event, The Big Golf Race. Moving forward this will be the starting point from which registration platforms for all other events will be created, incorporating any improvements that can be made based on testing and feedback we get on the platform along the way .
